It was a happier time for van Gogh, and he wrote to his brother Theo about the work “…under a gas lamp. The sky is aquamarine, the water is royal blue, the ground is mauve. The town is blue and purple. The gaslight is yellow and its reflections are russet gold descending down to a green bronze…Two colorful figures of lovers in the foreground.”
